Hello. I’m Thomas.
I write Shapes in the Fog: essays, stories, and occasional ramblings about being a person in a rather confusing world.
The questions keep crossing paths.
Faith, healing, embodiment, meaning: I tend to find that a question about one turns into a question about the others. And then, somehow, I’m writing about modern work, video games, or dragons.
In Faith & Doubt During Holy Week, I write about my conversion to Orthodox Christianity and the doubts that didn’t politely disappear afterward. In The Miracle of the Body, I describe chronic pain, dance, and learning to feel at home in my body.
Books and imagined worlds have been part of my life since childhood. On Writing, Fiction, and Modern Escapism gets into both my love of stories and my complicated relationship with escaping into them. I still write fiction. Apparently I haven’t settled the matter.
Why the fog?
My Skull is Full of Fog is one place to meet the idea behind the name: a world where truth and meaning can be hard to see, but where something still becomes recognizable in ordinary human life. The title is an invitation to keep looking.
